The prints shown have been produced as Limited Editions from intaglio images created on zinc plates which have been inked and hand-printed by the artist.
The method used to produce the metal plates is called etching and aquatint. The design is etched, using acid, into the surface of a zinc plate covered with aquatint resin which is attached to the plate by heating. The acid bites tiny rings around each resin grain and these hold sufficient ink to give the effect of a wash when printed. Ink is then rubbed into the lines and sunken areas of the plate. The ink is transferred to damp paper by applying heavy pressure using an etching press.
